What are smart buildings?

Smart buildings integrate advanced technologies, such as IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, automation systems and data analysis platforms, to optimise their operation. Building management systems (BMS) were initially designed for specific tasks such as controlling climate, monitoring energy consumption or managing safety. Their functional limitation, their specificity, however, as well as their isolation, prevents them from adapting to changing conditions or anticipating events.

AI takes management systems to a whole new level. Its ability to collate data in real-time from multiple sources (sensors, cameras, connected devices) with machine learning algorithms allows it to identify patterns, predict behaviour and make intelligent decisions.

For example, an AI-based system analyses historical energy consumption data and correlates it in real time with weather conditions and occupancy patterns to automatically adjust the climate control. This will reduce energy costs without compromising occupant comfort.
