Augmented Reality (AR) is increasingly being applied in a variety of fields and environments, perhaps most commonly in the leisure and entertainment sector. One of its applications is in climbing walls in the adventure areas of family entertainment centres, shopping centres, gyms and other leisure facilities. The combination of AR with climbing walls makes the experience more exciting for visitors and users and adds value to the attractions.

The compact size of the climbing wall in combination with the AR devices allows installation in almost any space. At the same time, its ease of use makes the new experience accessible to everyone. Furthermore, the ensemble adds great potential for adventure, namely:

Customisation of the experience: climbers personalise climbing routes and adjust them to their skill level, preferences and goals.

Increased safety: AR provides real-time feedback on climbers’ movements and position, increasing safety and reducing the risk of injury.

Motivation and challenge: allows the programming of increasingly challenging, or simply different, climbing routes, motivating users to try new possibilities.

-Social interaction: AR technology is used for collective play, competition and scoring.

Innovation and difference: AR differentiates adventure and climbing centres from the competition and offers an innovative aspect to visitors.
