Since Bioparc opened its doors in February 2008 in Valencia, Spain, the animal park has maintained a constant concern for the sustainability of its management, respect for the environment and the conservation of species. Throughout its years of activity it has incorporated the most innovative systems to ensure energy efficiency, ecological waste management, recycling and animal welfare. Now it announces a new, important step to further enhance the sustainability of its operation. The animal park has just received certification that the energy it consumes in its operations comes entirely from renewable sources.

Among the technologies that Bioparc already had for sustainable management is the largest biomass boiler in the region and a system of solar panels that provides energy for water heating and acclimatisation of the habitats of some of the species it houses. At the same time, to reduce consumption, it has frequency inverters and LED lighting; and for water management, it has the latest technology in diffusers, timers, smart irrigation, etc., and has eliminated chemical products in its purification and disinfection thanks to ozone equipment to which it entrusts these processes. In addition, phytosanitary treatments are carried out with biological products and fertigation in gardening exclusively with natural nutrients; and in terms of waste reduction, the animal park makes its own compost with pruning waste and animal excrement.  Finally, in 2019 it was the first park to completely eliminate the use of plastics in its restaurants and replace them with biodegradable and compostable materials.

From now on, thanks to the agreement signed with Axpo, one of Europe’s leading renewable energy suppliers, Bioparc will run on green electricity. Axpo is the largest supplier of renewable energy in Switzerland and one of the largest in Europe. It operates more than 100 biomass, fermentation and hydroelectric power plants, and has investments in solar and wind energy in 30 countries, including Spain, France and Italy. With the new agreement, Bioparc will save the atmosphere and the environment more than 580 tons of CO2, or “the equivalent of about 12,000 round trips by plane between Madrid and Valencia”.
