The construction of buildings and structures in general has a significant impact on the environment in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, extraction of raw materials or generation of waste. However, professionals in the sector, such as architects and engineers, are constantly investigating new ways to reduce the environmental impact of structures.
To this end, they have identified a number of measures that are taken to minimise this impact during all phases of an architectural project. Let us look at some of these measures:
- Choosing sustainable materials: opting for materials such as certified wood and/or recycled products helps to reduce the environmental footprint of a building.
- Use of environmentally friendly construction techniques.
- Use of renewable energies during the construction process and later during the operation and functioning of the project.
- Orientation of the building or structure to benefit from sunlight and encourage natural ventilation.
- Inclusion of gardens, green walls and/or green roofs on rooftops. This solution is not only sustainable, but also generates additional benefits for the health and well-being of the people using the structures.
These are just some of the possibilities. We are convinced that the exploration of innovative solutions in design, architecture and construction will still bring more sustainable and healthier buildings for people.
