Automation and the incorporation of advanced technologies in the production of goods and services, and now artificial intelligence (AI), has resulted in the blurring of the line between leisure and business over the past decades. It is time to rethink how we work and how we enjoy our leisure time.

The new paradigm of work

Indeed, within this general trend, and over the last decade alone, new technologies have transformed and are transforming our workplace. We now enjoy a flexibility that was previously unthinkable. We can work from anywhere in the world and we are discovering ways to integrate leisure into work routines. We can work our working day in a coworking space by the sea, or hold work meetings from a mountain hut via multiple video calls, or… location no longer limits productivity.

At the same time, this model has also led to an increase in business travel, which often includes activities and leisure time. This is known as ‘bleisure’ (a combination of “business” and “leisure”). According to recent studies, those who combine work and leisure enjoy higher levels of satisfaction, creativity and also productivity.

The power of leisure in business

So, as we can see, far from being a distraction or wasted time for business, leisure is a catalyst for business success. Activities such as playing sports, exploring new cultures or simply disconnecting from screens renew energy and improve mental clarity. Moreover, interpersonal connections and relationships that are initiated in informal contexts tend to be more genuine and long-lasting. That always opens the door to unexpected opportunities in the future.

An example of the latter is corporate retreats, which now often include leisure experiences such as creative workshops, outdoor activities and mindfulness moments. These experiences strengthen team bonding, foster innovation and improve overall organisational performance.

Balance: the key to success

However, the integration of leisure and business also presents challenges. It is important to set clear boundaries to avoid burnout and to ensure that both work and leisure time are truly effective. After all, flexibility can sometimes lead to an excess of time spent at work, or to leisure time encroaching on work time and distracting productive resources. Therefore, learning to disconnect when the time is right, while still prioritising personal well-being, is essential to maintain a healthy balance.

A future full of possibilities

As we move towards a more connected world, the ability to combine leisure and business will be a key skill. Companies that adopt this approach will not only attract the best talent, but also boost creativity, collaboration and happiness in their teams. In short, leisure and business are no longer opposites, but complementary elements for personal and professional growth.
