Under the theme ‘Awwal Bait’, which translates as ‘First Home’, the first Islamic Art Biennale was held at the Haj Terminal of King Abdul Aziz Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 23rd January to 23rd May 2023. The exhibition, which occupied more than 120,000 m2, featured historical pieces and other works by contemporary artists linked to Islamic culture. The combination of the modern architecture of Jeddah Airport’s Haj Terminal with traditional elements provided an evocative and inspiring atmosphere for visitors.

With a positive approach that unified tradition and modernity, the biennial demonstrated the richness and diversity of Islamic art today. The event was curated by leading architectural expert Sumayya Vally, who brought a fresh and innovative vision to the show. Vally is renowned for her work at the intersection of art, architecture and culture. Her visionary approach was evident in her curatorship and in the selection of works on display.

Participating artists presented a wide range of works, including video installations, dance, music, sculpture and more. Their artwork covered a broad spectrum, from reinterpreting classical Islamic motifs and patterns in contemporary forms to incorporating new technologies in art. In doing so, the biennial demonstrated the continuity of Islamic art in the 21st century.

The participation of artists from different countries and regions encouraged an enriching intercultural dialogue. In addition, the biennale was supported by leading partners who contributed to the promotion and dissemination of the event worldwide.
