The adoption of BIM methodology is still fragmented in Australia, although thanks to its relationship with the UK, along with New Zealand, it has made great progress in its implementation. As a result, large public projects are being undertaken with BIM methodology in Australia and its implementation in architecture is becoming more and more common.

In 2016, the government called for the creation of a smart infrastructure working group, with the aim of successfully implementing BIM on all public projects with a budget of more than AUD 50 million.

To facilitate the implementation of BIM methodology in companies, NATSPEC (National Construction Specification) has created a dedicated portal. This not-for-profit portal contains technical information to support the achievement of this goal. Among the documentation that can be found on the portal are a National BIM Guide, a BIM requirements specification template, a BIM Reference and Standards Guide, an Element Properties Matrix and a BIM Execution Plan Template.
