Canada has no regulations governing the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the architecture, engineering and construction sector. However, since 2018 it has made rapid progress in this area.

An example of this is the publication by the BIM Institute of Canada of several documents that help to interpret and understand the use of this tool. These include the Design Development Phase Toolkit, the Construction Phase Toolkit and the Handover and Maintenance Phase Toolkit. These documents cover all phases of an architectural project, from initial design through to management, once construction is completed.

To assist the development and implementation of the BIM methodology in Canada, buildingSMART-Canada, a council promoting its adoption and standardisation in the Canadian construction industry, was established in 2010.

Despite the lack of regulations, several projects have been carried out in Canada using BIM methodology. The Royal Alberta Museum or part of the Five Hills Health Region hospital, carried out by the Government of Saskatchewan, are examples of this.
