Beyond serving as venues for summer leisure, public swimming pools represent a vital, top-tier infrastructure for combating extreme heat. This is the aspect highlighted by the new proposal from Amusement Logic’s Design Department. With summers becoming longer and more intense, the municipal pool serves as a thermal refuge that is as effective as it is democratic—a place where the entire population, regardless of income, can find relief from heatwaves, whether in small towns or large cities.

This pool design approach entails extending operating hours during heatwaves and maximizing shade—specifically through real trees and/or plant-covered pergolas. It involves incorporating shallow water terraces for cooling off without swimming, as well as strategically placed misting systems, small natural waterfalls, and drinking-water fountains. As you can see, recreational swimming now goes hand in hand with a public health function.

This is a transferable concept, with construction methods feasible for existing facilities. Key features include shady trees and plant-covered pergolas, light-colored cool paving, shore-like shallow water areas, perimeter misting systems, white furniture, and pathways winding through a variety of colorful plant species. Municipalities can transform a leisure-focused budget item, into an investment in climate resilience and equity, thereby extending both the lifespan and the social utility of municipal facilities.
