When Yves Coffournic, a former gendarme in the French Republican Guard, found it necessary, after a motorbike accident, to undergo a rehabilitation programme in a swimming pool, he noted the lack of devices to help him do the physical exercises it required. He also found it frustrating and somewhat boring to pedal without making any progress on a conventional water bike. This is how he came up with the idea that led him to the design of a floating bicycle that could move in the water, capable of moving forwards or backwards by its rider’s choice. After developing several prototypes that he tested himself, he became convinced of the performance and the many possibilities of his invention. Finally, he sought the opinion of several health professionals and, given their positive views, he decided to commission an industrial design agency to develop the product he had devised. And so, Velaqua was born.
The industrial design company’s initial mission was to create an easy-to-use, safe, versatile and maintenance-free floating bicycle. These are precisely the characteristics of the Velaqua: a floating bike that moves forwards or backwards with a natural pedalling motion, allowing a variety of exercises with multiple body positions and which is easily transportable and suitable for use in all bodies of water. In addition to being a device for exercise, sport and rehabilitation, it is also a playful element for fun in the water. Therefore, the Velaqua water bike can be used for the well-being of the elderly, as well as for the entertainment of adults or for children’s games.
