The international standard ISO 19650 establishes how to manage information in projects that use BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodology. Its objective is to provide a common framework that facilitates collaboration between the different agents in architecture and construction. To this end, it ensures that information is managed in an orderly and efficient manner throughout the life cycle of a building or project, from design and construction to operation and maintenance.

The ISO 19650 standard is structured in several parts:

-ISO 19650-1: General concepts and principles.

-ISO 19650-2: Application of principles in the delivery phase (design and construction).

-ISO 19650-3: Information management in the operation phase of the building or project.

-ISO 19650-4: Processes for information exchange and data security.

-ISO 19650-5: Security considerations in information management.

-ISO 19650-6: Health and safety information.

This standard covers the entire life cycle of a project, as we have said, and ensures that information is consistent, accessible and traceable at every stage.

The standard applies, both locally and internationally, to building and infrastructure projects that require development using BIM methodology. Its main benefits include, as is well known, effective coordination between disciplines, standardisation of information exchanges, reduction of errors and optimisation of costs and deadlines.
