We bring you a discovery that we value for its simplicity of design and, at the same time, for its functional versatility. Moreover, it is an aquatic project, which brings it even closer to our area of interest. It is Loop Pool Tejo, a sculptural design for a public swimming pool located on the waters of the Tagus estuary, east of the Portuguese capital. It is a collaborative project between the Lisbon-based architectural studios X Atelier and Atelier Baum.

The design of Loop Pool Tejo is based on a simple figure, with no angles, no edges, no interruptions: the circle. However, the architects twist it in their design, partially duplicating and superimposing it and, thanks to variable inclinations and undulations that echo the waves – ‘inspired by the movement of water’, say the architects of X Atelier; in ‘the inherent fluidity of the waters of the Tagus River’, say those of Atelier Baum -, they produce in an almost surprising way a series of spaces of different character. This is how this functional versatility comes into play.

Yes, it is quite true that ‘the morphology of this pool structure (…) makes it possible to respond to various possible uses, therefore promoting sports and leisure activities on the river’. In the centre of the circular surface is the pool itself, a hole filled by the waters of the estuary filtered through the base. The perimeter of this circle of water, the solid part of the pool, acts as a circulation and seating area. Therefore, on the north side, the concrete circle rises and supports wide, undulating steps, ‘providing a safe environment for families’.

On the south, the ring is doubled and its upper part is raised, creating a space below it and a second line of steps ‘with its back to the bustle of the pool’, which would be a rest area, or an entry point to the river for other aquatic activities other than swimming, such as rowing or paddle boarding. At the same time, this elevation, which reaches a height of 3 m, also serves as a diving board for jumping into the pool. Finally, the space under the raised ring is a perfect area to enjoy the shade.

As you can see, Loop Pool Tejo is a simple design that at the same time meets the expectations of practically everyone, within reach of the public without the need to travel. This makes it an appropriate and inclusive project for a city like Lisbon.
