Germany has become a benchmark in Europe when it comes to BIM methodology. Approximately 70% of German construction companies use BIM at different levels. Most of them are architectural and design offices that mainly make use of BIM in the design phase of their projects.
Since 2017, BIM methodology has been mandatory in the country for projects with a value of more than €100 million. As of 31st December 2020, it became mandatory for all public contracts related to the construction of federal infrastructure.
To further support the implementation of the system, a group of industry associations, large companies and non-governmental organisations came together to found the German BIM methodology steering group “Planen Bauen 4.0”.
Some of the most important infrastructure pilot projects developed with BIM technology are the following:
- Filstalbrücke.
- Auenbachtal Viadukt.
- B31 Immenstaad – Friedrichshafen/Waggershausen.
- B87n Eilenburg – Mockrehna.
