The sector’s prospects before the summer season were good and these predictions were confirmed by the Spanish Federation of Campsites (FEEC), “average occupancy has been 80%”.

Even though the start of the summer was looking doubtful due to the instability of the weather, in the end, during the second fortnight of July and the whole month of August, many establishments on the Mediterranean coast, mainly in Andalusia, Murcia and Catalonia, were able to hang the “No Vacancies” sign.

The sector’s stability, recent investments in leisure, technology and infrastructures have converted camping for the fourth year running, into the 2nd most preferred option for Spanish people, behind the hotel sector. However, significantly, camping has become first choice for a high percentage of local tourists. According to FEEC data, national tourists represent 75% and foreign tourists 25%.

Generally, it’s good news for the sector in Spain, however an eye must be kept on Croatia’s campsites. Although usually very crowded, they are choosing to improve their installations, which will undoubtedly mean that some foreign visitors, above all those from Germany, will begin to look towards the Balkan country.

An increasing number of campsites are able to match what hotels offer, in regards to services and types of accommodation. This is an important factor to contemplate when choosing a campsite as a holiday destination, as, as well as being located in natural environments, near rivers, the sea, etc., they can also offer maximum comforts. This upward trend doesn’t mean that the more traditional ways of camping can’t still be enjoyed.
