In the discipline of theming, 3D scanning is a strategic tool for capturing environments, models and architectural elements — and even natural references — with millimetric precision. The ultimate aim is to incorporate the results into the digital design workflow and, ultimately, into the construction of themed environments. In short, it is about creating a faithful and immersive narrative experience for theme park visitors.
3D scanners record millions of points in space and generate a faithful and extremely precise three-dimensional model — a point cloud — of geometry and, often, the chromatic information of reality. From this point cloud, digital models are developed to support design processes, technical coordination, manufacture and execution.
The application — and versatility — of 3D scanning encompasses multiple processes:
- Reproduction of complex elements: capturing organic forms, ornamentation or natural textures that are later reinterpreted or replicated with a high level of detail.
- Surveying existing environments: documenting real spaces to ensure compatibility with themed interventions and to reduce deviations during construction.
- Integration into BIM workflows: point clouds serve as the foundation for digital models that enhance conceptual precision and technical decision-making from early stages.
- Fabrication and prefabrication: the generated models optimise machining, mould-making or 3D printing, thereby ensuring the required precision of themed elements.
As for the qualities of elements produced through 3D scanning, these include greater design coherence, realism and geometric accuracy. Reduced uncertainty and the optimisation of time and resources are further advantages, particularly in terms of production. At the same time, digitalisation makes it possible to explore geometries, adapt designs and narrow the gap between thematic storytelling and technical feasibility.
